S L E E P S T O R I E S

In older times we sat around campfires at night and listened to stories to help us fall asleep. On SleepyTV our guided meditations and stories draw on these older traditions and are voyages into your imagination to help you set sail on your sleep journey.

It has long been understood by older civilisations and the ancient yogis too that the state between waking and sleeping is a special place of rest, healing and insight.

And if you’ve never tried meditation before a guided meditation is a great introduction. Just lie back and listen and allow the sleep meditation to soothe your body and mind.

We start with a progressive relaxation or body scan of the whole body, mimicking the natural process of physical relaxation. Techniques are used then to quieten the mind using the breath and by focusing on visual images, opposite sensations or journey metaphors.

What the science says

Recent scientific findings have concluded that guided meditations can reduce heart rate or hormone irregularities and help blood pressure. Research coming out of the USA also suggests that those people regularly listening to guided meditations experience reduced anxiety and less emotional reactivity.

The Nervous System.

You hear a lot about winding down before bed. On the level of the nervous system that means making changes in the autonomous nervous system and moving from the sympathetic state (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic state (rest and digest). Much has been written about this over the last few decades but it seems that the ancient yogis were aware of this somehow.

Brainwaves.

So what goes on in our heads - or more particularly our brains? The science tells us that during these sleep meditations the brain shifts from Beta brainwaves - everyday alertness and stress to Alpha brainwaves - a more relaxed and creative state - then on possibly to Theta brainwaves - dream state or the beginning of sleep.
